FAQs

How does UV light kill bacteria and viruses?

UV radiation kills viruses and bacteria by damaging their genetic material (DNA and RNA). Of the three main types of UV light, UVC (which has a wavelength range of 200 to 280 nm) is the most effective for inactivating viruses, with the most effective wavelength being about 260 nm (Lytle, J Virol 2005).

Is this UV device an efficient steriliser?

These enclosed boxes are designed to disinfect phones or other small solid and generally flat objects, like credit cards, keys, or watches. Because the boxes are enclosed, they are safe to use, and because you can place your phone in the box and walk away, they don't take extraordinary effort.

Are there any safety considerations for this device?

UVC light can cause damage to the eyes and skin.

UV light should never be used on the skin or any other part of the body. Also, you should be careful not to look at it when using a UV-light device to clean objects or surfaces.

Do not expose yourself to the UVC light. The WHO writes that "UV lamps should not be used to sterilise hands or other areas of skin as UV radiation can cause skin irritation."

For UVC light to be effective, it needs line of sight, meaning that anything in the shadow of the UVC light will not get sterilised.

UVC light is most effective on flat, non-porous surfaces.

How long will the light in the UV box last?

The UV light in our unit is not a light bulb, it is a lamp bead attached to the circuit board. It has a life span of 100,000 hours. Please be gentle with the UVC lamp beads as they cannot be replaced in the unit when broken.
